Why Specialization in Multi-Family Construction Matters
August 10, 2021

At Eastern Valley Electric, we believe it is important to specialize. While EVE can perform single-family work (a typical house), we focus on multi-family residential (apartments / townhomes). We believe it is important for general contractors to pick trades who specialize in your specific need of construction. We’ve put together a list of where single-family vs multi-family electrical work really differ.

  1. Repetition

A critical difference between the two is repetition.
Building a home can be slower on a sqft basis as most actions are performed once. This requires a custom approach to the whole experience. EVE's background in multi-family projects allows us the opportunity to fine tune the job approach and execution. Proper due diligence in design and pre-planning is essential.

When we tackle the finishing stage of an apartment building, every unit has a level of familiarity, and many units are stacked down through the building. This allows a trade that knows how to take advantage of this repetition speed and efficiency.

  2. Scale

While the average home may be 2,500 - 4,500 sqft, an apartment building could be 50,000 sqft to 100,000 sqft. At phases of the project, this requires skilled crews of significant size to keep pace with the client’s schedule. Employing, training, and retaining this kind of work force can be a challenge.

  3. Commercial

Multi-family projects are by many standards classified as commercial projects due to their size, required servicing, and the fact that they often include commercial units on the first and second floors. Working at this level requires expertise beyond that of single-family.

Specialization is visible on all levels. Our employees pride themselves with the level of detail and efficiency that is required to perform their work. We plan to continue focusing on multi-family residential as we pursue the goal of becoming the most preferred multi-family contractor in the Fraser Valley.
